Completely giving yourself over to very demanding and needy people without a break is taxing; it’s also a privilege and an invaluable experience. It is only now in middle-age that I’m starting to understand not everything has to be all one way or the other; it’s ok to say it’s a beautiful, joyful gift AND unbearably lonely and difficult too.
