This story mirrors my experience with my daughter. It wasn’t until her freshman year of high school that a teacher pulled me aside and said, there’s an issue here and it’s not a sign of her intelligence, but she will not get through high school working at her pace. She had compensated so well for her low processing that she was anxious all the time and working ridiculously long hours with absolutely no supports in a NYC public school that simply did not have resources. We paid an insane amount of money to have her privately evaluated and she got the extra time she required. College was a relief to her as they accommodated her beautifully and without stigma and she was just accepted into Ivy League grad programs. I’m so happy to see her thrive but heartbroken that scores of kids suffer from this without the ability to get tested and get the help they need and deserve. If we hadn’t been able to pay for it, she wouldn’t have gotten it. It’s terribly unfair.
