When the Wordle of the Day is Exactly What You Need it to Be

A story about the universe having your back, one word at a time

Wordle is an international phenomenon that we all know by now unless we are living blissfully under a rock. One plays this game by guessing a five-letter word, then being shown on a grid which letters are correct and in the right spot, which are correct but in the wrong spot, and which are altogether wrong. A maximum of six tries later, one has guessed the word or one has lost.

Depending on the letters one guesses at the outset, the game is either a breeze or maddeningly elusive. Thus imagine my surprise one bleak January morning when I typed in my first word of the day and was instantly gratified to see that my wild guess was, in fact, the word of the day. And what was the special word?

A little backstory. A couple of days earlier, I signed my divorce papers. My husband and I have been separated for four years, so it’s not like I hadn’t, for months already, seen or prayed for this day to come. And yes, I know that I just called him my husband, because ex still feels foreign on my tongue and I’m not ready to use it consistently. Having been a wife for twenty-six years, having laid claim to a husband for twenty-six years, reverting back to single status is not actually like riding a bike…
